In a significant stride towards enhancing maritime infrastructure and economic prospects, the Odisha government has joined hands with Gopalpur Port for the further development and expansion of this major port. This collaborative effort aims to propel the port’s capabilities and stimulate economic growth in the region.
Land Transfer Marks Milestone
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formally inked between the Director of Ports and Inland Waterway Transport, Padmalochan Rou, and the CEO of Gopalpur Port Private Limited, marking a pivotal moment in the region’s maritime evolution. As part of this agreement, the state government has allocated approximately 119 acres of land to Gopalpur Port, underlining its commitment to the port’s expansion.
A Transformation Journey
Gopalpur Port, situated on the east coast of India, has traversed a remarkable transformation journey. Once operated by the Odisha government as a seasonal lighterage port since 1986-87, it was later awarded to Gopalpur Ports Private Limited through a Concession Agreement signed on September 14, 2006. The objective was to convert it into an all-weather direct berthing port under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Current Capacities and Contributions
Presently, the port boasts three berths, spanning a length of 800 meters, facilitating the simultaneous berthing of multiple vessels. It possesses an annual cargo handling capacity of 20 million metric tons (MMT), contributing substantially to trade and commerce in the region. The operations of Gopalpur Port have generated both direct and indirect employment opportunities for approximately 8,000 individuals, enhancing livelihoods and bolstering the local economy.
Strategic Location: A Gateway to Opportunities
Strategically positioned on the east coast of India, Gopalpur Port serves as a vital gateway to Southeast Asia and various other global destinations. Its expansion is anticipated to have a multiplier effect on the economy of Odisha, stimulating trade and investment while creating additional employment opportunities.
Charting a Path of Growth
The signing of the MoU underscores the commitment of both the Odisha government and Gopalpur Port Private Limited to the port’s growth trajectory. It is expected to pave the way for enhanced cargo handling capacities, improved infrastructure, and increased economic activity in the region.
In conclusion, the collaborative effort between the Odisha government and Gopalpur Port signifies a proactive step towards the region’s development and growth. As the port continues to evolve, it promises to unlock new opportunities and serve as a vital conduit for trade and connectivity, not just for Odisha but for the broader economic landscape of India and beyond.
