New Mangalore Port Trust handled the vessel MV.SSL Brahmaputra a large parcel size container vessel at the port on tuesday. The port authorities claimed that this is the largest size vessel Port of New Mangalore ever handed in terms of containers as well as the size of the vessel.
The vessel’s length is 260 metres, overall width 32.35 metres and dead weight tonnage of 50,900 tonnes. The vessel arrived early this week, laden with 1,521 TEUs (Twenty feet equivalent) containers with 25,864.40 tonnes of Raw Cashewnuts. It has also a scheduled plan of 300 TEUs of Export sea freight containers on her return voyage from New Mangalore port.
It may be highlighted here that the Sea freight Container traffic at NMPT increased from less than a meagre 2000 TEUs in 2000 to 1.5 lacs TEUs in 2020-2021.Until now, these containers were handled in various cargo berths of the port, considering the increases in the container throughput, NMPT is now considering mechanisation of container handing at the deep-draft berth no.14 through Mangalore Container Terminal Pvt Ltd (MCTPL) on PPP mode and the work order pertaining to this developmental work has been already awarded to MCTPL.
The port expects to boost the growth of container traffic at the port in the coming years.
